XVI International AIDS Conference, 2006. Redirected from XVI International AIDS Conference). The XVI International AIDS Conference was held in Toronto, Ontario, during the week of 13–18 August 2006. This was the third time that Canada has hosted the International AIDS Conference, after Montreal in 1989 and Vancouver in 1996. The main venue for the conference was the Metro Toronto Convention Centre (MTCC) in downtown Toronto.

The main venue for the conference was the IMPACT Muang Thong Thani convention centre at Nonthaburi, north-east of downtown Bangkok. It was the first international AIDS conference to be held in Southeast Asia. International AIDS conferences have been held regularly since the first one in Atlanta in 1985.

The International AIDS Society (IAS) is an association of HIV professionals, with 11,035 members from more than 160 countries working at all levels of the global HIV response. Its mission is to lead collective action on every front through its membership base, scientific authority and convening power.

The International AIDS Conference is the largest conference on any global health or development issue. First convened during the peak of the AIDS epidemic in 1985, this conference continues to provide a unique forum for the intersection of science and advocacy, and an opportunity to strengthen policies and programmes to ensure an evidence-based response to the epidemic. The conference also serves as a focal point to intensify political and financial commitments to AIDS

This conference has highlighted the importance of an even stronger focus on women and young people all over the world, who bear the greatest burden and need particular attention. Each of us now, as we prepare to return home, must take with us a vigorous sense of responsibility for action. There are three key areas for delivery: money, medicines and a motivated health workforce. And commitments sustained. This is no longer only an emergency but also a long-term development agenda. It calls for more than traditional international development assistance. Innovative financing mechanisms are now emerging, such as the UNITAID initiative of France, Brazil, Chile, Norway and the UK, which puts a levy on airline taxes to channel new money to HIV/AIDS work. This is very much welcome.
