Sonata For Violin, Op. 40. A1. I. Vivace. Four Ornaments (1969). A4. Moderato - Presto - Moderato - Allegro Molto. Composed By – Boris Blacher. B1. Dedication (Widwung). Composed By – Bruno Maderna.

Boris Blacher: Orchestral Variations on a Theme by Paganini. His style remained tonal but he pioneered a technique of rhythmic serialism represented in the piano concerto on this album. As usual, the late Herbert Kegel does a workmanlike job with the Dresden Philharmonie-an orchestra inferior to the famous Staatskapelle Dresden, but nevertheless well-suited for the 20th-century repertory.

At 19 Edinger appeared at the Berlin Festival playing works by Boris Blacher, risky repertory at the time. Her performances were so impressive, though, that she was immediately invited to appear with the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, with whom she played the Mendelssohn Violin Concerto. Edinger was soon an imposing presence on the international scene, regularly performing at the major concert venues across the globe. She has appeared with the Berlin Philharmonic more than a dozen times, in concerto repertory by Mozart, Beethoven, Tchaikovsky, Blacher, Zimmermann, and many others

The sonatas stem from a period late in Brahms's life where he discovered the beauty of the sound and tonal colour of the clarinet. The form of the clarinet sonata was largely undeveloped until after the completion of these sonatas, after which the combination of clarinet and piano was more readily used in composers’ new works.
