But if your recollection of their influence, traces of which can be heard on the records of the Shins, Rilo Kiley and even the last couple of Flaming Lips joints, is foggy, allow Montreal's Islands to give you a refresher course on their outstanding debut album, "Return to the Se. Created by Nick Diamonds and J'aime Tambeur, formerly of the annoying noise rock combo the Unicorns, the duo's current sonic incarnation favors melody over mayhem, and all the better for it. Their sound is definitely more on the more pastoral side, sometimes coming off like a Jon Brion-prod.

Perhaps in an effort to compete with Destroyer, Islands begin their new album Return to the Sea with a nine-minute epic titled Swans (Life After Death). Something like a heroic and mighty take on Elephant 6 style psych-pop, it’s a bold statement, a powerful song and an absolute triumph in songwriting. Easily more ambitious and moving than anything Nick Diamonds and J’aime T’ambour recorded in their previous band, the short-lived Unicorns, it’s a call for any doubters that they’ve grown up and will be taken seriously

The album combines rhythms and sounds of cultures in the southern and eastern hemispheres, as well as a dash of rap. Return To The Sea was recorded in the sweaty month of July while Islands was still merely a couple of lonely icebergs, not yet an archipelago. So local friends, including Richard Reed Parry, Regine Chasagne, Tim Kingsbury, Sarah Neufeld, Dan Boeckner, Spencer Krug, and lil' Mikey Feukrstack lent their valiant efforts to the recording process.

For die-hard Unicorns fans, Return to the Sea has the potential to be an intensely divisive album. In the diminishing wake of The Unicorns' sudden and still mysterious breakup, co-frontman Nick and drummer Jaime, along with a handful of other famous Canadian friends, have formed Islands, one of the most buzzworthy projects of the year. Hopes were high, not just for Unicorns fans, but for every teenager gazing north to pop mecca Canada.

Canadian indie outfit Islands went for broke this year by pumping out two new albums: Taste and Should I Remain Here at Sea? However, they aren't done with us yet, as they've just announced plans to celebrate the 10th anniversary of their debut album, Return to the Sea, with a new vinyl reissue. The original vinyl pressing of Nick Diamonds' first post-Unicorns LP was issued through Equator Records in the spring of 2006. Now, however, you can pick up a newly remastered vinyl version of the album, pressed on two 45 rpm LPs, through Islands' Bandcamp.
