It isn't without reason that Red Mecca is often referred to as one of Cabaret Voltaire's most cohesive and brilliant records. There are tangible bumpers (the record is buttressed by squealing/wheezing interpretations of Henry Mancini's music for Orson Welles' Touch of Evil), so by that aspect there's a tangible center

Hailing from Sheffield, the home of the northern steel industry, the band existed in one form or another for 6 years before releasing it's debut album, Mix-Up. The album didn't garner much attention in the post-punk saturated Britain, and the band slunk away into studio obscurity to record the follow up, The Voice of America. It was in this period that Cabaret Voltaire reached their creative peak, melding the disembodied noises from their synthesisers with tin sounding drumbeats that sounded reminiscent of the industry from which they were born.

Prior to Red Mecca, the band had released an EP called Three Mantras - a musical representation of their views on religious fundamentalism, Christian and Islamic, by means of a ʽWestern Mantraʼ and an ʽEastern Mantraʼ respectively (the liner notes jokingly apologized for the lack of the promised third mantra and explained that the record was underpriced to make up for that). Other than that, though, it's just another Cabaret Voltaire album, meaning that its sounds, at best, are interesting and curious rather than grappling.
