Rock and roll spread around the world in the 1950s and 1960s, entering Greece in the middle of the 1960s. Greek rock performers in the field include Kostas Tournas, Jimi Quidd (born Jimmy Hatzidimitriou, later member of The Dots and producer for Bad Brains), and Pavlos Sidiropoulos, the most important representative of Greek folk-rock and rock

Around the same time another academic, James A. Notopoulos, was doing a similar Homeric recording trip in Greece. His 25 tapes of Greek heroic poetry, folk tales, and folk songs are in the Library of Congress. Two albums were released – Folk Music of Modern Greece (1955, Folkways FE4454) and Folk Dances of Greece (1956, Folkways FE4467). It wasn’t just foreigners, though, who were collecting folk music in post-war Greece. One’s ear is more severely tested when listening to the sounds of ‘Greece in Music and Song. nce we get used to the new sounds, songs such as Servicos (a song about a famous eighteenth-century traveller named Rovas) or Miralogia – laments which are sometimes sung at marriages – become very interesting.

Greek folk music (Dhemotikó) includes a variety of Greek styles played by ethnic Greeks in Greece, Cyprus, Australia, the United States and elsewhere. Apart from the common music found all-around Greece, there are distinct types of folk music, sometimes related to the history or simply the taste of the specific places. YouTube Encyclopedic. 1/2. Recorded by James Notopoulos in 1956, Folk Dances of Greece is the second release in his series on the musical and oratory traditions of Greece. He writes: The dance is one of the most vital social and artistic expressions of the Greek people as well as one of its oldest traditions. As our ancient sources reveal, the dances were many and varied; they gave expression to all phases of life, such as fertility, religion, war. Liner notes include detailed descriptions of the dances, translated lyrics, and musical transcriptions provided by Spyros Peristeres. RELATED ALBUMS Folk Music of Greece.
