After the initial efforts with Songs For A Taylor and Things We Like, Jack produced Harmony Row, what I consider his finest work. There were very few flashes of the brilliance in composition and songwriting from what came after. He basically took what he started with on his solo debut, keeping some of the collaborators like lyricist Peter Brown and guitarist Chris Spedding, and took it further afield.

2. Escape To The Royal Wood (On Ice). Harmony Row ‎(LP, Album, Gat). 2383 065. Jack Bruce.

The compositions of Jack Bruce take over on Disraeli Gears (1967), an album decidedly more pop and less bluesy, produced by Felix Pappalardi. Strange Brew is a typical example of how the group could transform blues into rock for intellectuals who were tired of Beatles pop tunes. Tales Of Brave Ulysses, Clapton's tour de force, features the introduction of the wah-wah pedal. Immediately after the dissolution of Cream, Jack Bruce began to collaborate with jazz musicians.

Bruce then recorded his third solo album Harmony Row, but this was not as commercially successful as Songs for a Tailor. In 1976 Bruce formed a new band with drummer Simon Phillips and keyboardist Tony Hymas. The group recorded an album, called How's Tricks. A world tour followed, but the album was a commercial failure. The follow-up album, Jet Set Jewel, was rejected at the time by Bruce's record label RSO as not being marketable, and RSO ultimately dropped Bruce from their roster. In 1979 he toured with members from the Mahavishnu Orchestra, reuniting him with John McLaughlin, and introducing him to drummer Billy Cobham.

Filed under Jazz Related Rock By JACK BRUCE. Reducing the backing band from his debut to guitarist Chris Spedding and drummer John Marshall, Jack Bruce continued to play a wide range of instruments for his second solo album 'Harmony Ro. If not as commercially successful as his debut, it remains a more satisfying album on some levels. Tonally 'Harmony Row' occupies similar territory for 'Songs for a Tailor,' with Bruce's piano featuring heavily, usually more prominent than his trademark 'busy' bass

The album takes its title from a tenement street in Glasgow, near where Bruce grew up. The street, since demolished, was famous as the largest unbroken houserow in Europe, stretching for over a mile Although since cited by Bruce as his favourite solo album, Harmony Row did not chart upon its release (it did continue to sell over a long period of time consistently)
