Porgy and Bess (CL 1274) is a studio album by jazz musician Miles Davis, released in March 1959 on Columbia Records. The album features arrangements by Davis and collaborator Gil Evans from George Gershwin's 1935 opera of the same name. The album was recorded in four sessions on July 22, July 29, August 4, and August 18, 1958, at Columbia's 30th Street Studio in New York City.
There is infinitely more happening on Porgy and Bess, however, with much of the evidence existing in the subtle significance of the hauntingly lyrical passages from Danny Banks' (alto flute) solos, which commence on "Fishermen, Strawberry and Devil Crab. Or the emotive bass and tuba duet that runs throughout "Buzzard Song. The impeccable digital remastering and subsequent reissue - which likewise applies to the Miles Davis & Gil Evans: The Complete Columbia Studio Recordings box set - only magnifies the refulgence of Porgy and Bess
Recorded in support of Kind of Blue, the best-selling jazz album of all time. 4CD set includes concerts recorded in Paris, Copenhagen and Stockholm from original master tapes. 1LP features the concert from Copenhagen and 2LP features the concerts from Paris. In 1958, George Gershwin’s opera Porgy And Bess was very much in vogue. Several jazz artists such as Louis Armstrong, Ella Fitzgerald, Buddy Collette, and Mundell Lowe had already created their own versions of certain songs. Cal Lampley, George Avakian’s successor, wanted to take advantage of the fact that a film version of the opera was in production. Original issue: Columbia LP CS 8095 on March 9, 1959 Producer: Cal Lampley Engineer: Frank Laico July 22, 1958 (a) Miles Davis (flh); Ernie Royal (tpt); Johnny Coles (tpt); Bernie Glow (tpt); Louis Mucci (tpt); Joe Bennett (tb); Frank Rehak (tb); Jimmy Cleveland (tb); Dick Hixon (tb.
Released in 1959, Porgy and Bess is Davis’ second collaborative album with jazz pianist Gil Evans; the first being Miles Ahead in 1957. The album features arrangements from the 1935 opera of the same name by George Gershwin, with additional arrangements by Evans and Davis themselves. This album was essential in jazz’s transition from the bebop of the previous decade, into the modal era that would influence Davis’ next studio effort Kind of Blue. With Porgy and Bess, Davis and Evans would focus on improvised solos that incorporated multiple scales over minimal chord changes
Porgy and Bess is a studio album by jazz musician Miles Davis, released in March 1959 on Columbia. Davis saw Russell's methods of composition as a means of getting away from the dense chord-laden compositions of his time, which Davis had labeled "thick". Modal composition, with its reliance on scales and modes, represented, as Davis put it, "a return to melody".
