On the Shore is the second, and final, album by British folk rock band Trees. It was recorded in October 1970, and released in January 1971 on CBS Records (64168). It was later released on CD by the BGO label. Sleeve design by Hipgnosis. The cover photographs were taken at The Hill Garden, part of Inverforth House, Hampstead Heath in North West London, designed by landscape architect Thomas Mawson. The model in the photo was Katie Meehan, daughter of Tony Meehan from The Shadows.
In 1970 TREES released their 2nd album with "On The Shore" blending strong elements of Prog, Psychedelia and Folk. Led by the strong and beautiful voice of Celia Humphris (sounds like a mix of Annie Haslam and Sandy Denny), "On The Shore" delivers a wild contrast of soft 70's classical Avante Garde folk rock. The album itself is absolutely recommendable to folk rock lovers, in particular because of there are plenty of excellent haunting moments gathered on the record (Soldier's Three, Polly On The Shore, Streets of Derry, Geordie). These ethereal renderings of pretty unknown folk songs easily touch the 5-star mark.
On The Shore featured cover artwork by Storm Thorgesen of the Hipgnosis studio. Like other folk contemporaries, Trees was compared with Fairport Convention, but regarded as delivering with a more psychedelic edge. The group's material was divided between adaptations of traditional songs and original compositions, primarily by Bias Boshell. This latest formation also contributed to Phil Trainer solo album Trainer (BASF, 1972). Trees performed extensively throughout their career, predominantly on the university circuit but appearing twice at Fairfield Halls and at the Queen Elizabeth Hall on London's South Bank, with varying degrees of success and at times recognised with significant critical praise. Throughout their touring career they supported acts including Fotheringay, Fairport Convention, Matthew's Southern Comfort

Trees was an English folk rock band that existed between 1970 and 1973. Although the group met with little commercial success in their time, the reputation of the band has grown over the years. Like other folk contemporaries, Trees' music was influenced by Fairport Convention, but with a heavier and more psychedelic edge. The group's material was divided between adaptations of traditional songs and original compositions. On the Shore is the second (and last) album by British folk rock band Trees. On the Shore is the second (and last) album by British folk rock band Trees. I bought this album after Trees appeared on OGWT performing 'Polly On The Shore', or perhaps it could possibly have been some other late night music TV programme on BBC2. It's always been one of my favourite albums of the early 70's and one that I habitually return to the turntable every so often, even though I've since acquired the remastered version on CD.
