The Toccata in C major, Op. 7 by Robert Schumann, was completed in 1836. The piece is in sonata-allegro form. When the work was completed in 1836, Schumann believed it was the "hardest piece ever written. While it later lost this distinction to Liszt's etudes (such as Feux Follets), it is still considered one of the most challenging and brutally taxing works in the solo repertoire.
Schumann, R. 38. The finale in this manuscript seems to be the 1830 Presto (WoO 5,2), not the 1835 finale as claimed by the notes on the last page, so perhaps 1830-33 is more accurate. This manuscript also - see discussion - uses Italian tempo headings for the most part rather than the German headers used in the published score. Opus/Catalogue NumberOp. I-Catalogue NumberI-Cat.
His style is inspired and inspiring, his heightened sense of form flirts with improvisation and his strength is bewildering. He is built like the Colossus of Rhodes with the hands of a Titan or the strength of an emperor and Boris Berezovsky leaves nobody indifferent
