Dating back to his time as the chief conductor of the Dresden State Orchestra, Herbert Blomstedt has always been a supreme interpreter of Richard Strauss' music, and this recording of three of Strauss' famous symphonic tone poems that he made in the mid 90s with the San Francisco Symphony is proof of that. Blomstedt and the orchestra shine in all three works-"Also Sprach Zarathustra"; "Death And Transfiguration"; and "Till Eulenspiegel's Merry Pranks.

The tone poems of Richard Strauss are noted as the high point of program music in the latter part of the 19th century, extending its boundaries and taking the concept of realism in music to an unprecedented level. In these works, he widened the expressive range of music while depicting subjects many times thought unsuitable for musical depiction. Tod und Verklärung (Death and Transfiguration), Op. 24 (1889). Till Eulenspiegels lustige Streiche (Till Eulenspeigel's Merry Pranks), Op. 28 (1895). Also sprach Zarathustra (Thus Spake Zarathustra), Op. 30 (1896). Most of the tone poems written after this hiatus are significantly longer and larger in their orchestral demands than their predecessors Characteristics.

Richard Strauss was arguably the greatest composer of what we often call the "symphonic tone poem. Often composed with extremely large orchestras in mind, not to mention often brooding subject matter, these tone poems, composed at the height of late German romanticism near the end of the 19th century and into the first decades of the 20th century, were not only incredible orchestral showcases, but also pieces that laid the groundwork for many of the biggest works. The demands of Strauss are by no means beyond them (they've recorded "Zarathustra" on at least two occasions, in 1970 with Leonard Bernstein, and in 1980 with Zubin Mehta), but they are given the added boost of Sinopoli's intrinsic knowledge of the composer. The sound quality is up to both the first-rate standards of both the . engineers and the Avery Fisher Hall concert venue where this recording was made. Opus/Catalogue NumberOp.
