Luke Jackson is a young Roots singer/songwriter from Canterbury, Kent and has been performing live since the age of 1. 2018 was another busy year with numerous shows and a very well received live album. 2019 has started just as busily with solo, duo and trio performances, a trip to Folk Alliance in Canada and lot’s planned for the rest of the year. Constantly cited as a natural heir to songwriting guitar greats Richard Thompson and Martin Simpson, Luke Jackson steps on the gas, branches out and reveals another part of his vast armoury in This Family Tree as he introduces his Trio – Andy Sharps (bass) and Connor Downs (percussion). Sharp and savvy, his increasingly sophisticated narrative songs here interweave the tale of one family’s high and low journey.

The Jackson family is an American family of musicians and entertainers from Gary, Indiana. Six children of Joseph Walter (or Joe) and Katherine Esther Jackson form the members of Motown boy band the Jackson 5 (later known as the Jacksons). Joe worked as their manager. The Jackson family, both as a musical group and as solo artists, have achieved success in the field of popular music from the late 1960s and onward.

The album deftly charts the way he’s expanded his sound without losing anything of the rawness of his solo shows. I’ve only ever seen him in the one man and a guitar setting, but each time I’ve been blown away by the intensity and power of his performance, very much a contrast to the fairly soft and quietly spoken young man in-between songs. A snapshot of a town’s drunken and a sleazy nightlife, the bluesy Ain’t No Trouble comes from the This Family Tree mini-album, Jackson again drawing vocal comparisons with Robert Plant. The solo sets return with the more subdued Last Train, the story of a soldier travelling home to break the bad news to a comrade’s family and return his possessions, expanded in the live setting to segue into a closing snatch from Dylan’s Blowin’ In The Wind.
