Alternative 4 is the fourth album by the British rock band Anathema. It was released on 22 June 1998 through Peaceville Records. Like Eternity, Alternative 4 is sung with clean vocals. The title of the album is derived from Leslie Watkins' book entitled Alternative 3. Bassist and co-principal songwriter Duncan Patterson had read it a few years before they wrote the album.

Alternative 4' is the first album where Vincent Cavanagh is bringing out his signature vocal sound. It would be seen in future albums, even in albums where Anathema stop playing metal. It's a range in which Cavanagh feels more comfortable with and people should really appreciate that he found his sound. It might be worth pointing out here that 'Alternative 4', although not really the stepping-stone album for Anathema (probably 'The Silent Enigma' or 'Eternity', which purged the last vestiges of doom from their sound and broadened their scope to accomodate many textures and colours), has influenced many of the bands on the fringes between metal and.

Alternative 4 sounds like you found out she screwed with you behind your back, but there will never be reconciliation because of her passing, and yet you still love her, hence the more abrasive lyrics and metal-like passages. Empty is one of those more powerful tracks, with strong hateful/painful lyrics, and a charging rhythm. I would claim that Judgement is hands down, far and away the Anathema album that sounds the most like Pink Floyd.
