Honolulu City Lights" is a song composed by Keola Beamer in the early 1970s. This is the original recording by the Beamer Brothers. The song was a local hit in Hawaii and is still remembered fondly by many Hawaiians, including those citizens who have left the Island state for whatever reasons, and long to go back. A cover was done by Richard and Karen Carpenter in 1978, but the song was not released until 1986 on a single, and 1989 on an album.

The composer of "Honolulu City Lights," one of Hawaii's top selling songs of all time, Beamer was one of the first to blend traditional Hawaiian chants and instruments with contemporary influences. Representing the fifth generation of musicians in his family, Beamer traces his roots back to King Kamehemeha and Queen Ahiakumai, 15th century rulers of Hawaii.

The album collects unreleased music from throughout the band's history from 1968 until 1976, and both the band's major singers (Damo Suzuki and Malcolm Mooney) are featured.

The album opens with the title track, Honolulu City Lights – which is a slow song, but still pretty nice. I know I was expecting one of the Hawaiian sounding songs you hear in movies, but nope, it’s slow and relaxing. Next up comes Kaliponi Slack Key – which seems to be an instrumental, which kind of reminds me of the Allman Brothers Whipping Post – but with less Southern Rock. So far, this album is pretty relaxing. Gives me the feel that Hawaii is laid back and relaxing.

The Beamer Brothers album was re-released in 1999 as "Honolulu City Lights – 20th Anniversary" but listed as "Honolulu City Lights – 20th Anniversary" in leading catalogs and remains in print as of 2009. The Carpenters' cover. They liked it and wanted to record it, eventually recording it at the same session as "Slow Dance".
