CV & JAB is Christina Vantzou and John Also Bennett, two artists that might already be familiar to many of you from their individual work over the years for the Kranky and Spectrum Spools labels. Together they have made this slowly engrossing album for Shelter Press - who else - perhaps one of the most elusive, uncanny and multi-layered Ambient albums we’ve heard in what feels like a long time, a worthy follow-up to a frankly astonishing sequence of releases on the label that started with Felicia Atkinson’s modern classic 'Hand In Hand'.
Working under their initials – CV & JAB – they attempted to translate Taylor’s elusive gestural lexicon into sound. The results are appropriately minimal, malleable, and mysterious. Opener Cactus With Vent sets the tone: insectoid murmurings and fractured crystalline tones seesaw in and out of focus, eventually disappeari. Fingers of Thought 02:34. Thoughts of a Dot as it Travels a Surface is the title of an album derived from a series of wall drawings begun in 2014 by multi-disciplinary Paris-based artist Zin Taylor. Drawn in simple black-and-white, the large-scale pieces depict linear landscapes populated with rough-hewn objects: potted cacti, sculptural boulders, steaming stone baths.

Working under their initials CV & JAB, they attempted to translate Taylor's elusive gestural lexicon into sound. Opener "Cactus With Vent" sets the tone: insectoid murmurings and fractured crystalline tones seesaw in and out of focus, eventually disappearing within a wash of churning water. Each composition flows unbroken into the next, much like Taylor's continuous line, emphasizing fluidity, curvature, and connectivity. Hot Tub" introduces a mesmerizing synthetic flute-like raga, pirouetting.

Is there such a thing as a non-arbitrary performance of a graphic score, whether that happens in the relatively conservative, formalized space opened up by a solitary composer in the tradition of John Cage or, as is the case for Thoughts Of A Dot As It Travels A Surface, in public, together, and of a graphic work not strictly presented as a. score? Yes and no, probably. I don’t personally think Vantzou and Bennett’s album sounds like Zin Taylor’s wall drawing, and I don’t know how it could.
The album is an ambitious, genre-free dive into the darkest recesses of the Black Lodge, with backmasked voices spitting whispers over heart-stopping strings and hoarse, stuttering electronics. A musical interpretation of Canadian visual artist Zin Taylor’s vast panoramic wall drawing Thoughts of a Dot as it Travels a Surface, CV & JAB’s debut is nothing if not ambitious. It’s a collaboration between Kranky’s Christina Vantzou and John Also Bennett, one of the members of synth trio FORMA, that re-casts Taylor’s bold expressions as eered modular bleeps and textures, using the drawing as a graphical score. If that sounds like a slog, don’t worry: Vantzou and Bennett might be methodical and rigorous but they fill their art with soul, beauty and mystery.
