Songs for Drella is a concept album by The Velvet Underground alumni Lou Reed and John Cale. It was released in 1990 by Sire Records.

If Songs for Drella seems modest from a musical standpoint, it's likely neither Reed nor Cale wanted the music to distract from their story, and here they paint a portrait of Warhol that has far more depth and poignancy than his public image would have led one to expect. It's a moving and deeply felt tribute to a misunderstood man, and it's a pleasure to hear these two comrades-in-arms working together again, even if their renewed collaboration was destined to be short-lived.

Songs for Drella is a concept album by Lou Reed and John Cale, both formerly of the Velvet Underground, and is dedicated to the memory of Andy Warhol, their mentor, who had died unexpectedly in 1987. Drella was a nickname for Warhol coined by Warhol Superstar Ondine, a contraction of Dracula andCinderella, used by Warhol's crowd but never liked by Warhol himself.

Despite much personal antipathy between them, Lou Reed and John Cale were moved enough by Andy Warhol’s death to reunite and make a tribute album in his memory. It is a chronologically told musical biography. On the first listening it is great and interesting from first to last, but many of the songs don’t stand up to repeated listening. There are a few great songs here though so it is definitely worth getting. Songs for Drella closely mirrors the life of Pop Artist Andy Warhol through the music of John Cale and Lou Reed. Based on reality and myth surrounding Warhol the songs create a very intimate look at what life was like for the artist, and the people around him. The songs themselves are fantastic. They are very simple, and that simplicity creates a great background for the dynamic story that takes center stage, the life af the factory people.
