This album is perfection of soundwaves. Winds has the right idea on this album that not all powerful metal has to be loud and fist raising. Carl August Tideman (formerly of Arcturus) displays his amazing neoclassical stylings on this album. Jan Axel Von Bloomberg (of Mayhem) shows that he can play any style. The rest of the band also excels at their respective instruments. The music is, suffice to say, quiet
Winds' first full-length, Reflections of the I, is a high-minded collection of ornate yet mellow and tastefully executed e metal songs. In addition, the album has an overarching form to it, with the songs becoming somewhat more intense as the album goes on, giving it the feel of a suite or song cycle
And I'm not saying that for nationalis. he roster of this label includes some of the best bands actually on the scene, and the new Winds from the north are indeed worthy to be defined so. After the debut MCD Of Entity And Mind this Norwegian band comes to us with their first full-length that is a masterpiece. To define Winds' music is not easy, as for all the albums which have that something special allowing them to go beyond the schemes; anyway we can say that it is a melancholic and deep gothic-progressive metal which meets arrangements and sonorities proper of classical music, not just metal parts alternated with violins or cellos.
Winds, for those who not know them, are an excellent and talented band from Norway and the Reflections of the I is their second (they released a mini CD in May 2000 - and this is their official debut full-length album) release. They officially took shape back in 1998 from members who used to play, or still play, in other famous bands such as Arcturus, Mayhem, and more. No question mark over their executive abilities (Hellhammer on the drums is a guarantee for real heavy music!!!) and the music they play is a combination of many metal styles along with classical music
Winds contains members of various black/prog metal bands. The music is a mixture of metal and classical music in one great combination. The album features the terrific keyboard work of Andy Winter(Age of Silence), Carl August Tidemann's mesmerizing guitar work, a small orchestra of violin, viola, cello, bass, and the wonderful clean vocals of Lars Eric Si(Age of Silence, Honcho, khold). A beautiful album filled with a mixture of dark/light, symphonies and masterful guitar work. slowfire85 4/5 2006-2-28.
