Sir Adrian Boult's recording of the Enigma Variations with the London Symphony was made when both he and the orchestra were at their peak. It reflects an extraordinary blend of spontaneity and the grand manner, and shows great insight into the score. These were recorded well before the advent of digital recording technology, and they show just a little bit of their age with some minor congestion at peaks, a trace of boominess with timpani, and ever-so-slightly less refined sound than we are accustomed to with today's recordings.
Sir John Barbirolli, CH (2 December 1899 – 29 July 1970), né Giovanni Battista Barbirolli, was a British conductor and cellist. He is remembered above all as conductor of the Hallé Orchestra in Manchester, which he helped save from dissolution in 1943 and conducted for the rest of his life. Earlier in his career he was Arturo Toscanini's successor as music director of the New York Philharmonic, serving from 1936 to 1943

These are earlier recordings that he did with his own orchestra, the Halle, in the 1950s. Barbirolli uses an organ in the finale of the Enigma Variations. The recording is a little bass heavy but this is a small caveat. For people who consider Barbirolli to be a bit indulgent as a conductor, these recordings may come as a surprise. Barbirolli uses an organ in the finale of the Enigma Variations (something he did not do in his Philharmonia remake I seem to recall).
Edward Elgar was an English hero. Our consideration of his Enigma Variations describes their creation, the solutions to the enigmas of the 14 individual variations, the insoluble underlying puzzle, and then some notable recordings – the pioneers, the other monaural studio recordings, and three distinctive later recordings. Finally, we note sources for further information. Everyone loves a good mystery. Of the fifteen riddles packed into Sir Edward Elgar's 1899 Enigma Variations, the most intriguing one has yet to be solved. In the annals of English music, Elgar was a true hero
