Every December, British music magazine NME compiles a list of what it considers the best albums of the year. It was started in 1974. The list is usually published in one of the issues sold before Christmas – in 2006 it was published in the issue for December the 9th. The companion list is NME single of the year.
1986 compilation album by various artists. C86. Compilation album by. various artists. In 1996, NME continued the tradition of compiling a new band album (this time a CD) by releasing C96. This had little impact, with Mogwai and Broadcast being the only acts on the compilation to subsequently enjoy mainstream success. Three other bands on the compilation - Babybird, The Delgados and Urusei Yatsura - had brief success in the United Kingdom after the compilation's release.
The term Various Artists is used in the record industry when numerous singers and musicians collaborate on a song or collection of songs. fm, compilation album tracks appear under the name of Various Artists erroneously because the individual artist is not listed in the album's ID3 information.
After 28 years of being held by many as the gold standard for indie-pop, 1986's C86 compilation is getting a lavish reissue with two bonus discs assembled by one of its original curators, former NME writer Neil Taylor, who also supplies copious liner notes. In pop music, 82 seconds can be an eternity. That’s how long Primal Scream’s Velocity Girl lasts, and the song was enough to have crystallized an entire era and established an undying narrative.
Of course, NME being NME, they tried their darndest to recreate such indie-rock kingmaking by doing the same thing in 1996 with, of course C96. Although two bands from that compilation did go on to acclaim all their own (Mogwai and Broadcast), the rest of the compilation was self-indulgent pablum, ending with a terrible song by the band Quickspace (then billed as Quickspace Supersport) called "Song for NME". By the time you start congratulating yourself, that's when you know the party is over. The women of ethereal Patagonian trio Fémina team up with Iggy Pop and Quantic on exquisite third album Perlas & Conchas.
The album won the Grammy Award for Best Pop Vocal Album at the 60th Annual Grammy Awards. NME. Retrieved 3 March 2017. a b Snapes, Laura (10 March 2017).
