Both Sides Now is a concept album by Canadian singer-songwriter Joni Mitchell that was released in 2000. It is her 17th studio album. The album won two Grammy Awards in 2001 for Best Traditional Pop Vocal Album and Best Instrumental Arrangement Accompanying Vocalist(s) for the song "Both Sides, Now" and a Juno Award for Vocal Jazz Album of the Year. The album traces the progress of the modern relationship through Mitchell's orchestral renditions of classic jazz songs.
Clouds is the second studio album by Canadian singer-songwriter Joni Mitchell, released on May 1, 1969, by Reprise Records. After releasing her debut album to considerable exposure, Mitchell recorded the album at A&M Studios in Hollywood. She produced most of the album and painted a self-portrait for its cover artwork. Clouds has subtle, unconventional harmonies and songs about lovers, among other themes.
Released on the 1959 album, "100 Strings and Joni". Written by Jimmy Van Heusen and Johnny Burke. Originally a hit in 1940 for both the Tommy Dorsey and Glenn Miller orchestras. The musicians at Abbey Road were almost knocked out of their chairs when Joni did this (I think in one take). The amazing thing is the "100 Strings and Joni" was conceived, authorized by M-G-M, planned, arranged and recorded in a brief two weeks or so when Joni was at the Palladium in London. Joni said she couldn't believe how quickly the arrangements were ready, complicated as they were. The album proved an international sensation.
Produced by Larry Klein and Joni Mitchell Musical Director: Larry Klein Arranged and conducted by Vince Mendoza except "Stormy Weather" arranged by Vince Mendoza and Gordon Jenkins.
Her voice is newly elastic and expressive, and it's the first record where she sounds like she might actually be fun to hang out with. Ladies also features her generation-defining "Woodstock", "The Circle Game" (Mitchell's answer back to Neil Young's nostalgic "Sugar Mountain"), and her blustery gentrification sing-along, "Big Yellow Taxi".
