John Lennon/Plastic Ono Band is the debut solo album by English musician John Lennon. The album was recorded simultaneously with Ono's debut avant-garde solo album, Yoko Ono/Plastic Ono Band, at Ascot Sound Studios and Abbey Road Studios using the same musicians and production team and nearly identical cover artwork.
The new album, John Lennon/Plastic Ono Band, was to be both a powerful statement and a mainstream event. John Lennon/Plastic Ono Band is not the bleak record of some descriptions, for there are some beautiful melodies and gently beguiling arrangements. But the stark purity of the songs is always paramount. Mother’, with its funereal bell, opens the album on a note of solemn introspection, building to an authentically Primal Scream climax of abandonment.
Plastic Ono Band was more than John Lennon's kiss-off to the Beatles. It was his demolition of everything the previous decade had stood for, a hard-eyed confrontation with the demons that hounded him and a piercing cry for whatever love remained. Listen to John Lennon Perform 'Mother'. The simplicity of what Klaus and I played with him gave him a great opportunity to actually, for the first time, really use his voice and emotion how he could. There was no battle going on," Starr said in the Classic Albums: John Lennon/Plastic Ono Band documentary.
