Their first album, Dire Straits, cost next to nothing to record, received minimal promotion and still, within a year of its release in 1978, became a massive hit. Unlike the rest of the class of '77 they made huge inroads in America, Europe and Australasia. It wasn't so much that they discovered their audience: in many territories where the band had never been seen, and were then completely unknown, the audience found them. When the Straits sang about an elderly jazz band in a South London pub, as they did on their first single 'Sultans of Swing', they engraved the scene on your memory, right down to the knot of bored teenagers 'dressed in their best brown baggies and their platform soles' at the back. The track is a masterpiece of social observation.

Sultans of Swing" is a song by Dire Straits from their debut album, written by band's frontman Mark Knopfler. Although the song was originally released in 1978, then it was re-released in 1979, that caused it to become a hit in the United Kingdom and in the United States. He entered a pub where a dull band was closing out the night to an audience of several drunks ignorant of their surroundings. The hapless band ended their play with the lead singer announcing, without any irony, "Goodnight and thank you. We are the Sultans of Swing. Knopfler took a lot of songwriting ideas from observing everyday people, but that got harder to do when he became famous. The music for "Sultans of Swing" was originally composed by Mark Knopfler on a National Steel guitar in an open tuning, though Mark didn't think, that song was good at first.

Dire Straits played a nearly 10 minute version with lots of saxophone at Live Aid in 1985. System Of A Down sometimes covers this at concerts. According to Rolling Stone magazine in their "100 Greatest Guitar Songs" issue, Mark Knopfler wrote the song on acoustic guitar, then switched to a Fender Stratocaster and that was the ONLY album I owned. Am I crazy? Kevin from Dublin, IrelandIt's funny listening to so many people wax poetic about both Sultans of Swing and Knopfler.

What have the artists said about the song?
