The Pretty Things started recording their fourth album in late 1967, and had they not been compelled to hack it together in fits and starts, snatching time in EMI’s Abbey Road studio in-between club dates and money-spinning library music work, it could have been a contender. As it is, this eight-disc, 50th-anniversary vinyl collection – featuring mono and stereo mixes, a 1998 live set and copies of the Pretty Things four contemporary singles – is the final word on the most thrilling near miss of a career strewn with wrong turns. HG Wells steam punk with a heavy slab of Mervyn Peake gothic thrown in, the album follows moonstruck Sebastian F Sorrow from cradle to decrepitude. Morphing from factory fodder into cannon fodder, Sorrow survives the Great War only to experience more grief as his childhood sweetheart dies in an airship disaster.

Audio CD. The Pretty Things. Marking 50 years since the world's first rock opera, '. Sorrow', is one of the great classics of the Psychedelic era. The album stands favourable comparison with 'Sgt Pepper' and 'Piper At The Gates Of Dawn' as one of the defining records of the time. Originally recorded at Abbey Road in 1967 and 1968 it was one of the first true concept albums, pre-dating 'Tommy' by a full year.

The Pretty Things ‎– . Label: Sundazed Music ‎– LP 5224. First Sundazed reissue of the original 1968 album on clear blue vinyl. Coffin design on front sleeve.

Parachute, released in 1970, is the fifth studio album by the English rock band The Pretty Things, following . Sorrow and preceding Freeway Madness. It is their first album without guitarist Dick Taylor.

The Pretty Things were signed to the Fontana record label and their last album with that label, Emotions, left a sour taste in their mouths. The label forced a producer and orchestral arrangements on them that took the album into territories far from what they had in mind. How about another special little box, Ken?’ and Ken would come back an hour or two later, with some amazing gizmo that made a kazoo sound like a VC10! The band challenged Abbey Road’s engineers, who were more than accommodating in their pursuit to comply with the technical demand for sonic oddness. The battle between The Pretty Things and The Who on whether one influenced the other is a moot point, but listen to Old Man Going, one of the great songs on . The opening energetic acoustic guitar riff sounds familiar?
