The band, with Haden on bass, Michael Brecker on tenor, Brad Mehldau on piano, and Brian Blade on drums, is unassailably strong. But listeners could have lived without the ear-candy sheen provided by the 34-piece orchestra, arranged primarily by Alan Broadbent, with additional contributions from Jeremy Lubbock and Vince Mendoza. Broadbent and Mendoza also penned charts for Jane Monheit's In the Sun, released two weeks earlier.

Release group by Charlie Haden with Michael Brecker feat. Brad Mehldau and Brian Blade. FR. Gitanes Jazz Productions.

Brad Mehldau is a jazz pianist. He first recorded in 1991, for saxophonist Christopher Hollyday's The Natural Moment. He has recorded more than thirty albums as leader or co-leader, many more as a sideman, and for several soundtracks. An asterisk ( ) after the year indicates that it is the year of release. Mehldau plays piano on all albums, unless otherwise indicated. Promotional album (not for sale): Deregulating Jazz (trio, with Larry Grenadier (bass), Jorge Rossy (drums)) (released 2000, Warner Bros.

On his latest album, Haden returns to his themes of America. This time around, however, the material is far less innovative, and at times, far too soft. Enter the sentimental stylings of Steven Bishop. After a wonderful Haden solo over Blades' deft soft ride and snare, Mehldau offers a sweet light touch on the keys before giving way to a terrific Brecker solo. Haden is in top form, and the band offers a very tight laid back swing as they effortlessly restates the theme. But the track only leaves you longing for more material to let this band stretch out. The Haden, Brecker, and Mehldau original ballad "Travels" is another highlight, with a lovely melody and a terrific Mehldau solo, but overall, the song is relatively light fare. The band challenges itself a bit more when Haden once again returns to his roots with "Prism", a tune written by his early '70s bandmate Keith Jarret.
