Jan Erik Kongshaug is one of a handful of recording engineers whose name and work over the years has earned the respect and admiration of musicians and discerning jazz connoisseurs the world over. His work with Manfred Eicher of ECM records is memorable, and Kongshaug is now one of the most requested sound engineers in jazz. Jan Erik Kongshaug was the recording engineer. The resulting album, "Afric Pepperbird", was the beginning of a continuing musical relationship that has spanned almost thirty years. In 1978 Kongshaug started a five year period of freelancing. Drummer Per Oddvar Johansen has been on several sessions with various groups at Rainbow studio over the last few years and I’ve always been amazed by his playing. I’ve known bassist Harald Johnsen for over a year now.

Jan Erik Kongshaug (born 4 July 1944) is a Norwegian jazz musician (guitar), sound engineer and composer, the son of guitarist John Kongshaug. Kongshaug was born in Trondheim. He started playing the accordion (1950), guitar (1958) and bass (1964). Kongshaug got his examen artium in 1963, and took education in the electronics by the Trondheim Technical School in 1967. Then he worked for Arne Bendiksen Studio (1967–1974) and Talent Studio (1974–79) in Oslo, and did some jobs in New York.

After years of being a freelancer at the New York Power Plant Station, Jan Kongshaug started to build his own empire in Oslo in the year 1983. At that time there was no studio in Norway that could properly record acoustic jazz. The Rainbow Studios were born, which developed itself to be the most desirable address for high class recordings, even reaching a legendary status. In terms of quality of sound, dynamics and spatiality, there is no equal line u. .
