Fork in the Road is the 29th studio album by Canadian musician Neil Young, released April 7, 2009, on Reprise Records. The album was released on vinyl on July 26, 2009. The album was inspired by Young's Lincoln Continental that had been retooled to run entirely on alternative energy, and Young's background with the Lincvolt project he has been working on alongside mechanic Jonathan Goodwin. The project has been to develop a viable electric energy power system for automobiles.
A stripped back, underproduced road movie of an album. Old Shakey gives us a garage record in the true sense of the word. On the verge (isn't he always?) of finally giving all those fans his huge first volume of Archives he gets sidetracked again. One suspects that he's chuckling at the ire that's flashing across fan messageboards. Call him perverse, but you'll never get quite what you expect from Neil Young. Much like Greendale or Living With War this is Neil just following his muse because he can and screw the critics. The results may not be pretty (one suspects that despite Prairie Wind's gentle flow, Neil doesn't really like to do pretty any more). There's little of his wild fretboard explorations either. But as companion piece to greater, more focussed work like Sleeps With Angels, this rusty bit of rock buffs up quite nicely.

For the past few years, Neil Young's hobby has been what's known as the Lincvolt project, converting his treasured 1959 Lincoln Continental to run on eco-fuels, the vehicle then being driven across the USA. Now, as is often the way with this most prolific and spontaneous of rockers, he's made a record about the experience – a single-issue album which, Neil being Neil, gets. Unfortunately, he's no scientific genius either, which renders the string of eco-car songs little more than bland automotive boogies, the sound of Fork in the Road being largely unvarnished blues-rock of undistinguished quality, ragged but nowhere near as glorious as he can deliver. Johnny Magic" is a tribute to Jonathan Goodwin, his boffin partner in the Lincvolt business, while the funk-rock strutter "Fuel Line" is a lazy would-be eco-anthem too drab and clumsy to be adopted as a clarion call.
The Fork In the Road album was inspired by Young's LincVolt electric car project, in which the singer and biodiesel pioneer Jonathan Goodwin retrofitted a 1959 Lincoln with an experimental electric engine. Young told Rolling Stone: "My life's at a point where I'd rather get rid of my material things and turn them into money to do the LincVolt. The album was written whilst Young toured in the winter of 2008-09.

Produced by Young and Niko Bolas under the moniker The Volume Dealers, FORK IN THE ROAD was an album inspired by a car. Not just any car, mind you, but the Lincoln Continental that Young had gotten retooled to run on alternative energy. Neil might be writing records as quickly as a blogger these days but musically he's stuck in the past, never letting go of his chunky Les Paul and candied folk harmonies, embracing his status as an old crank so enthusiastically he happily presents himself as a crazy old coot on the album's cover. FORK IN THE ROAD ultimately met a better fate than its inspiration: the album hit on the Billboard 200 and earned Young a Grammy nod for Best Solo Rock Vocal Performance, but the Lincvolt’s wall charging system caused a fire which caused more than a million dollars of damage.
In every respect, Fork In The Road – a brief, bracing, at times very funny garage-rock blast – is the absolute opposite of such an enterprise. Instead, this is the work of a man who has – again, so soon – been moved by current events to put something down on paper.
