Albert Leornes Greene (born April 13, 1946), often known as The Reverend Al Green, is an American singer, songwriter and record producer, best known for recording a series of soul hit singles in the early 1970s, including "Take Me to the River", "Tired of Being Alone", "I'm Still in Love with You", "Love and Happiness", and his signature song, "Let's Stay Together".
Gotta Find A New World. What Am I Gonna Do With Myself. I Want To Hold Your Hand. Nothing Impossible With Love. Baby, What's Wrong With You. Memphis, Tennessee.
Al Green’s first four albums are the beginning of the truly sublime rhythm-and-blues story of the 1970s: It’s a story about one of the most soulful voices in pop history - a rough yet refined tenor - combined with a mystically tight Memphis studio band. For generations of inheritors (from Jodeci to U2) and lovers, Green, producer Willie Mitchell and the five-man Hi Records house band set the benchmark for soul.
The results were mutually beneficial; Green got the great production, arrangements, and backing from the Hi Rhythm section that often turned good songs into classics, and he sang with the conviction and talent that provided the final component in an artistically and commercially satisfying union. It was Morrissey who once sang 'reissue repackage, re-evaluate the songs, double pack with a photograph extra track and a tacky badge' in reference to the re release, but there are two ways of looking at this form of media, they can either be seen as a cynical marketing ploy by a profit hungry record company simply cashing in on a former. artists past glory or they can be viewed merely as a reminder of a great piece of work, a worth while injection of nostalgia. Well in this case it clearly is the latter . Featuring Green at the tender age of just 23, Green Is Blues showcases his smooth, soulful voice perfectly, and gives music fans of the digital age a chance to trace the roots of a Soul legend.

Al Green's 2nd album, 1970's "Green Is Blues" is a nice mix of stylish covers and a couple originals. The Right Stuff label has reissued this Hi release with a 4 bonus tracks, remastering and doing a nice job technically with this release. Talk to Me" has Green's swinging soul groove that is sure to set your hips in motion. Green's cover of Smoky Robinson's "My Girl" is a soft gentle rendition, then the horns come in to punch up the mix. "The Letter" is a slow smoker as Green milks his romantic longing.
