He worked early on with the Sabby Lewis big band, Frankie Newton, Luis Russell (1945-1947), and Lester Young (1947-1949). After some engagements with Kai Winding, Haynes was a member of the Charlie Parker Quintet (1949-1952); he also recorded during this era with Bud Powell, Wardell Gray, and Stan Getz

Like Minds is a 1998 jazz album by vibraphonist Gary Burton with Chick Corea, Pat Metheny, Roy Haynes, and Dave Holland. In 1999, the album won a Grammy Award for Best Jazz Instrumental Performance, Individual or Group. Recordings took place in the Avatar Sound Studio in New York City. The album received a Grammy Award as best jazz album, and sold it so well, that it took fifth place in Billboard's jazz album list. All tracks written by Pat Metheny except where noted. Gary Burton – vibraphone.

After some engagements with Kai Winding, Haynes was a member of the Charlie Parker Quintet (1949-1952); he also recorded during this era with Bud Powell, Wardell Gray, and Stan Getz. Haynes toured the world with Sarah Vaughan (1953-1958); played with Thelonious Monk in 1958; led his own group; and gigged with George Shearing, Lennie Tristano, Eric Dolphy, and Getz (1961).

WKCR-FM, New York, surveyed Haynes's career in 301 hours of programming, January 11–23, 2009. On April 21, 2016, at the age of 91, Haynes performed drums on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, accompanied by Jon Batiste and Stay Human (band). Esquire named Roy Haynes one of the Best Dressed Men in America in 1960, along with Fred Astaire, Miles Davis, Clark Gable, and Cary Grant. 1954: Roy Haynes Modern Group. 1956: Jazz Abroad (Mercury) split album with Quincy Jones. 1966: The Stan Getz Quartet in Paris (Stan Getz). 1967: Duster (Gary Burton).
