Blue Note is unquestionably the most iconic jazz label there has ever been. In saying that, it may well be the most iconic record label of all time. When Alfred Lion started the label in 1939, recording boogie woogie pianists Meade Lux Lewis and Albert Ammons, his intention was to bring to the public the kind of music that he felt was important. It is a mission that he never wavered from, nor have the Blue Note albums that have followed in his illustrious footsteps. However, to become a major brand, and remain so, it can only be achieved with quality music and the thousands of Blue Note albums down the years attest to this fact. They may not all be to your ear or the kind of music you like, but it’s impossible not to acknowledge the sheer quality of the recordings listed her. nd for the vast majority of those that failed to make the cut.

From Thelonious Monk’s Criss Cross, and Sonny Rollins’ Tune Up, to Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers’ definitive version of Bobby Timmons’ Moanin’, John Coltrane’s Blue Train, and Horace Silver’s original trio version of Que Pasa, there isn’t a weak cut in the bunch. Some tunes included here, such as Chet Baker’s Let’s Get Lost, for instance, were originally recorded for labels Blue Note - through their parent company EM I- later acquired such as Pacific Jazz and World Pacific. But it hardy matters, as this is one absolutely killer vintage jazz mixtape on compact disc

Blue Note Records is an American jazz record label that is owned by Universal Music Group and operated with Decca Records. Established in 1939 by Alfred Lion and Max Margulis, it derives its name from the blue notes of jazz and the blues. Originally dedicated to recording traditional jazz and small group swing, from 1947 the label began to switch its attention to modern jazz.

There were also some other designers involved in the Blue Note production during the years, notably Andy Warhol, Harold Feinstein and Tom Hannan. HAROLD FEINSTEIN is one of the world's premier photographers. His works are found in major museums including Museum of Modern Art and his portfolios, photo essays, and articles have been published in major periodicals around the world including LIFE and Audubon. In the 1950s he worked for some record companys including Blue Note.

Blue Note missed out on early Bebop (there is no Charlie Parker on the label) but caught up by recording all the early masterpieces by the magnificently idiosyncratic pianist/composer Thelonious Monk, starting in 1947. This is the only album that Coltrane made for Blue Note as leader. By general acclaim, however, it is rated as the best of his early recordings, and among the finest of his career. 4 Art Blakey: Moanin’ (1958). The drummer Art Blakey was one of Blue Note’s staple figures. Selecting one from the stack of albums Blakey made for Blue Note with his Jazz Messengers is tricky. This album has a hit in the title track by Bobby Timmons. 5 Hank Mobley: Workout (1961). Tenor saxophonist Hank Mobley was a musician’s musician, underrated during his life, a cult after his death.

Blue Note: 25 Essential Albums. Bossenger and Adam Blyweiss. But there’s one label that’s essentially synonymous with jazz: Blue Note. Founded in 1939 by Alfred Lion and Max Margulis, Blue Note began as an imprint that specialized in pressing swing and boogie woogie records, and later began to build a reputation for releasing bold new sounds in jazz from hard bop to post-bop, and avant-garde and free jazz. And let’s give a hand to the incredible album art by Reid Miles. For being such a scion of jazz, it seems a little weird that this is ‘Trane’s only Blue Note album guided by his own hand from start to finish. Yet in honoring a verbal agreement with label founder Alfred Lion he ended up doing the right thing for Blue Note’s reputation, for his own legacy, and for jazz history.
