Thrice - The Alchemy Index: Volumes III & IV - Air & Earth. Outside of Sputnikmusic, where the reception was generally favorable, the band was criticized for satisfying the premise of this project too literally. And despite these instrumental high points, Thrice now seems to transcend their instrumental roles. Air along with Water are discs that further push Thrice past the rock band mold that they grew up on. Admittedly, the Air disc is imbalanced. There is a lack of continuity in the sound, and some of the best tracks don't necessarily capture the essence of "air" as well as the more obviously designed tracks do.
A Song For Milly Michaelson. Digging My Own Grave. The Earth Isn't Humming. The Lion And The Wolf. III & IV - Air & Earth.
Released April 15, 2008, this album completes the Alchemy Index set that begun with Volumes 1 & 2, Fire & Water. Vol. 3 Air has a sound that varies between an airy alternative rock and an airy ambient feel. 4 Earth serves up a bluesy folk that makes it sound like you’re in wood-paneled living room with the band or, in some cases, a smokey bar. (They recorded it in a house with the furniture removed to achieve this sonic impression. The Alchemy Index, Vols. 3 & 4: Air & Earth Q&A. Producers Teppei Teranishi & Thrice. Writers Dustin Kensrue, Frodus.
For The Alchemy Index Vols. III & IV: Air & Earth, the material is appropriately lofty to represent the former element but surprisingly sparse for the latter. But the album glows in the earth index; It feels downright gritty and dirty but manages to sound plain beautiful, just like a diamond in the rough. This album captures the sound of the elements and my heart as a music lover. 0 of 0 users found this helpful.
I-II: Fire & Water from the first set with Vols. III-IV: Earth & Air. There's little evidence of the ferocious screamo aesthetic that characterized releases like The Illusion of Safety; instead Air & Earth ventures into mostly acoustic, highly melodic territory. The tight, technically complex instrumental prowess of the band is still on display, but the mood is much more atmospheric
III & IV: Air & Earth. It’s 41 seconds into The Sky Is Falling (when the hand-claps start) that you realize the second half of Thrice’s Alchemy Index has more in common with Porcupine Tree and Johnny Cash than their 2001 debut Identity Crisis–which is essentially what the band set out to do. Earth is largely acoustic, and although it could’ve mimicked frontman Dustin Kensrue’s 2007 solo album Please Come Home, it features a more contemporary and crisp tone, with traces of oboe-aided Murder By Death ( Digging My Own Grave ) and old-time revivalism ( Come All You Weary ).
