Banco de Gaia is an electronic music project from England, formed in 1989 by Toby Marks (born 1964, South London). The music of Banco de Gaia is mostly categorized as ambient dub and downtempo. Marks works to cross genres, often using Arabic and Middle Eastern samples against a bass heavy reggae, rock, or trance rhythm to produce deeply textured tracks that progress layer upon layer. In 1978, Marks began his musical career as a drummer in a heavy metal band.
Banco de Gaia is one of the first great international performers, a true artist who created an amazing concert at EXIT back in 2001, and already then announced, with his spiritual musical performance, the rise of the festival in Novi Sad to the very top of the world’s festival industry
It was nominated for the Mercury Music Prize on its release, reached No1 in the independent charts in the UK and was licensed worldwide

This compilation of work from the last decade by Banco de Gaia (aka Toby Marks) not only shows off his best work in a setting that's a continuous mix, but also makes one of the strongest cases yet for electronica as the new prog rock. It might not have the complex time signatures or rampant instrumental virtuosity of an earlier era, but it does offer far more than most rock music, with depth, ingenuity, and a tune that - generally - progress from A to B, and in the best cases, to C and beyond
