Oumou Sangare was born in Bamako, Mali in 1969. er, who was pregnant at the time, and their three small children. The struggle to keep the family afloat was the backdrop to Oumou’s childhood. Oumou's mother was a singer and her main source of income was the ‘sumu’ (wedding and baptism celebrations organised by women) or 'street parties' as Oumou calls them. In 2003 she promoted the release of the 2CD collection simply titled ‘Oumou’, a retrospective look at her career to date. The album features 12 of the best tracks from her first three World Circuit albums, plus 8 tracks previously unreleased on CD (including 6 tracks from the best-selling Mali cassette ‘Laban’). The tour included an incredible performance at WOMAD that was hailed by critics as one of the best in the festival’s history.

Oumou Sangaré (born 2 February 1968 in Bamako) is a Malian wassoulou musician. Wassoulou is descended from traditional hunting songs, and is accompanied by a calabash. Many of Sangare's songs concern love and marriage, especially freedom of choice in marriage. Her Moussolou album was an unprecedented West African hit. Sites: oumousangare. Variations: Viewing All Oumou Sangare. O. Sangare, Oumou, Oumou Sangaré, Oumou Sangaró, Sangare.

Sangaré at Sines, Portugal, 2007. Background information. Sangaré recorded her first album, Moussoulou ("Women"), with Amadou Ba Guindo, a renowned maestro of Malian music. The album was very successful in Africa, with more than 200,000 copies sold. With the help of Ali Farka Touré, Sangaré signed with the English label World Circuit. At the age of 21, she was already a star. Oumou Sangaré is considered an ambassador of Wassoulou; her music has been inspired by the music and traditional dances of the region. She writes and composes her songs, which often include social criticism, especially concerning women's low status in society.
