Biography by Richard S. Ginell. The "Godfather of Latin Jazz," a conga legend in NYC jazz circles and beyond.
Album · 1971 · 8 Songs. Skillfully balancing explosive Afro-Cuban percussion and sweeping brass splendor, Bronx-based Ray Barretto and his ensemble vivify the dance floor on 1970’s Barretto Power. The salsa-inflected opener, Oye la Noticia, is an ebullient tropical jam where Adalberto Santiago’s voice leaps through crescendoing keys and swings along vibrant horns. The dazzling Se Que Volveras is a mesmerizing ode to unrequited love, while the gripping, piano-laced Power is loaded with fierce tropical fusion and a New York City attitude. Barretto Power Ray Barretto.
