Saturdays Youth is still huge music, with three players in addition to Gonzalez- but it has a different kind of heft from previous M83 records. On Before the Dawn Heals Us, M83 was all about the vertical push- layer after layer of synths and drums piled up in a vertiginous tower. But these new songs disperse in all directions: Producers Ewan Pearson and Ken Thomas spread the melodies and beats into a sound world of uncommon vibrancy and pristine clarity, mounted on a massive yet now more proportionate scale

M83 follows an obvious but successful formula with Saturdays Youth. The female vocals sound extremely generic, which is the albums largest flaw. Not to mention that the other singer sounds like pretty much any other radio electropop songstress.

Ten years ago this Sunday, M83 released their fifth album Saturdays Youth. A decade later, it is a work that feels singular relative to the predominant indie mentality of the time, and yet so emblematic of where we were headed. If you recall, it is an album that was talked about a lot with concern to ’80s revivalism. And, it’s true - Saturdays Youth dove straight into the sounds and ethos of the ’80s. Or, at least, our notion of the ’80s. Beginning as an electronic French duo in 2001, M83 had already gone through some transitions.
