James Travis "Jim" Reeves (August 20, 1923 – July 31, 1964) was an American country and popular music singer-songwriter. With records charting from the 1950s to the 1980s, he became well known as a practitioner of the Nashville sound (a mixture of older country-style music with elements of popular music). Reeves scored his greatest success with the Joe Allison composition "He'll Have to Go". Known as "Gentleman Jim", his songs continued to chart for years after his death. Reeves died at age 40 in the crash of a private airplane.
The original was released as an "album cut" on the 1961 LP "Tall Tales & Short Tempers" and got virtually no airplay at all. The background music on the 1961 version is drastically different from this version, much softer and more low key. This 1977 overdub was produced by Bud Logan (not Chet Atkins, who produced so many other JR overdubs, as well as all of his RCA songs while he was alive), Bud also is playing the electric guitar. I love this somewhat rare Jim Reeves song. Also I am an amature singer and I enjoy trying to sing his songs. I just recorded and posted my version of this song. Y'all should listen to the Harry Johnson version. Nothing against Jim Reeves he was a great performer.
It's Nothing to Me. It's Only A Paper Moon. Jealous Got Me Strapped. The Jim Reeves Medley. The Letter Edged In Black. The Marriage of Mexican Joe (Carolyn Bradshaw).
There is a reason BMG calls this The Only Jim Reeves Album, and that's because it is all killer, no filler! Certainly there are more extensive collections, but few of them come in single-disc form. This one is chock-full of classic Reeves from the period when he was at the very peak of his powers and a song interpreter in the early countrypolitan tradition for Chet Atkins at RCA. "Welcome to My World" leads this off, natch, but "I Love You Because" is here, as is "He'll Have to Go," "When Two Worlds Collide," and "Is It Really Over,".
