You might also remember Hurley as the drummer from the fictitious band Trouble, alongside Alex Zhang Hungtai of Dirty Beaches, and David Lynch’s son Riley, who performed at the Roadhouse in "Part 5" of The Return.

In this light, Anthology Resource Vol. 1 △△ makes more sense, both as an accompaniment to Twin Peaks and as a standalone album. You’re not meant to make this music the centerpiece of your mental landscape, any more than you’re intended to ignore the on-screen imagery to listen to it during the show. Take it as it comes-noticing it when it becomes noticeable, enjoying it when it becomes enjoyable, and drifting away from it when it drifts away from you. Back to home.

In 2001, David Lynch was burned by the experience of Mulholland Drive, a feature film he salvaged from a rejected television show pilot. These were selected with the help of Dean Hurley, the series’ music director and sound supervisor. In addition, Hurley has composed numerous drone works that slot into the series’ more expressive sections, collected in Anthology Resource Volume 1: ∆∆. Twin Peaks is far from Hurley’s first gig with Lynch. With her new album 'She's Back' plus a GRAMMY Lifetime Achievement Award, Dionne Warwick remains a regal force among music legends. Christian John Wikane.

Dean Hurley is a sound supervisor whose 2017 album Anthology Resource Vol. 1 △△ featured soundtrack cues he created for the third season of David Lynch’s Twin Peaks. Anthology Resource Vol. II: Philosophy of Beyond is out July 12 via Sacred Bones. Hurley’s new record includes work he created for the 2018 Eddie Alcazar film Perfect-a film scored by Flying Lotus. It also features material created in residency for Art Gallery of New South Wales’ Masters of Modern Sound event

A collection of soundtrack cues from the third season of Twin Peaks, Anthology Resource Vol. 1 △△ is most effective when it remains in the background, tugging at the edges of your subconscious. ☆☆½ ~ An inspiringly remarkable album. I feel intensely engaged with this consistent and deeply satisfying music in a wholly compelling unique way. 1mo. Or consider a donation? End of year lists.

Notes

"Although Twin Peaks: The Return has hosted an array of Roadhouse performers and spotlighted music throughout its new season, a large part of the show’s sonic identity has been defined by the space between sound effects and music. Sound and music supervisor Dean Hurley’s first installment of the library-style Anthology Resource series showcases his original sound design and music compositions featured in the show’s very distinctive-sounding third season. From ethereal tones to sputtering electricity to densely brooding musical cues, this release operates as an unofficial ambient score to Twin Peaks, offering a more abstract counterpoint to the show’s official soundtrack and score. (You might also remember Hurley as the drummer from the fictitious band Trouble, alongside Alex Zhang Hungtai of Dirty Beaches, and David Lynch’s son Riley, who performed at the Roadhouse in "Part 5" of The Return.)"
