It’s fun, it’s pop music, and I’m not trying to make it sound like anything that it’s not, but these songs to me really do represent some heavy shit. We are sitting in the home studio of Tommy Brown, Grande’s close friend and a producer on Thank U, Next, at the end of a noiseless cul-de-sac in Northridge, in the San Fernando Valley. It’s a dance that spins out quickly. Grande begins to cry nine minutes into our conversation, at the mention of Coachella, which she headlined this year for the first time.
It’s Real is mainly concerned with the bruising-ness of love. Every song involves a second-person addressee; lovers are black and blue, emotionally or otherwise, feeling haunted and misunderstood, fading away. It’s rough terrain, but Timony refuses to sulk or back down; this is a record about fighting to stay connected, a commendable impulse right about now. Fittingly, the energy never flags, with plenty of familiar gestures to trainspot.
It’s just really good, I can’t explain it, but it’s just something that happens. The reason why I make music is to understand myself and the world around me, Yellow Days added in an official press statement. According to Yellow Days, the purpose of songs like It’s Real Life is to chronicle the experiences that come with youth. It’s all about being young and having this overwhelming sense of emotion, this confusion, all heading towards an eventual goal of happiness. It’s all about the hope within, he says. K-Ci & JoJo's first album Love Always established the Jodeci refugees as fine R&B vocalists, blending classic soul traditions with contemporary urban production and technique. For those expecting a flat-out masterpiece, It's Real will disappoint, primarily because it doesn't so much as expand on past glories as it simply replicates them.
