The band that became WRITING ON THE WALL began as Scottish soul band the JURY in the mid-sixties, but transforming themselves like so many of their contemporaries into a psychedelic-tinged group along with their renaming in 1968. The band issued but one official studio album, the 1969 release 'The Power of the Picts'.
Writing on the Wall formed out of a Scottish soul cum psych band named Jury before relocating to England and releasing this, their only official studio release in 1969. Apparently the band toiled on until finally breaking up in the wake of their equipment being stolen in 1973. Besides this CD reissue there is an LP re-release and a couple of other compilations of this disc and some other material they recorded along the way but never released while the band was still together. Both are more psych-leaning than most of the rest of the album and may represent the transitional state of the band as it moved from that to a more progressive sound as they worked on the tracks for this album. Like I said, this isn’t ground-breaking stuff, but it is mildly interesting from a historical perspective.

The Power of the Picts was released in 1969 on a small label called Middle Earth Records (the label only had something like five albums released in its very short life), so you know right the original LP isn't easy to come by. I believe the label was named after the famous London nightclub, and I guess the label signed those bands who performed at Middle Earth the bigger labels wouldn't touch (as many major acts had played in the club too). The band consisted of vocalist Linnie Paterson, guitarist Willy Finlayson, bassist Jake Scott, drummer Jimmy Hush, and keyboardist Bill Scott
Writing on the Wall's only album was theatrical heavy ck that, despite its power and menace, was too obviously derivative of better and more original artists to qualify as a notable work. The organ-guitar blends owe much to the Doors, Procol Harum, and Traffic, though the attitude is somehow more sour and ominous than any of those groups. Throw in some of the portentous drama from the narrations to the Elektra astrological concept album The Zodiac: Cosmic Sounds (particularly on "Aries") as well. A problem is, however, that not many singers other than Morrison and Brown could pull off this kind of solemn poetic mood, and on "Aries," to take one example, the attempt to create a seance-like atmosphere seems faintly ridiculous.
