The Spectre Within is actually better than its successor, while still being kind of "the same". The only real difference between this album and Deus Ex Machina is that the melodies on this album tend to be really strong. If I'm listening to progressive electronic in the '80s style, then I at least expect some very powerful melodies to get through the cheesy new-agey percussive elements and poppy sound effects, and this album delivers. Among the powerful synth melodies are also a few cosmic-chirping sounds that give the periphery something to notice. The energy on this album in particular reminds me of another electronic artist that I really enjoy (Przemyslaw Rudz) and a group that I don't enjoy quite as much (Software) smashed together, in a strange attempt to mash the old with the new with the cheesy. The mixture doesn't really come through all that well, however.

The Spectre Within is the second studio album by progressive metal band Fates Warning, released in October 1985 through Metal Blade Records.

The Spectre Within differs quite a bit from its immediate counterparts in the Fates Warning discography – this record is a huge step from Night on Brocken, in terms of both quality and identity, in that while the band retain a huge amount of influences from those bands I listed (and of course Black Sabbath), they have more of a distinctive identity. The guitar work is also what makes this such a truly incredible album. Fates Warning actually understand the idea of a great riff to carry the songs, and the riffs are absolutely among the best in their vein. The riffs are very traditional in nature, boasting an overt Diamond Head, Iron Maiden, and Mercyful Fate influence, but they’re by no means clones of those bands, and they’re incredibly well constructed.

The Spectre Within . 1985. Progressive Heavy Metal. Take me away take me away I wanna know what's deep within Take me away. Drawing near someone passes through me, A silent entity never looking back I won't dare Evil eyes staring through he walls of stone As I feared I travel not alone. Laughter's echoes with the blatant wind I have passed the threshold deep within me. A voice of thunder said turn back Tabernacle is forbidden No mortal dares to enter here I want to know
