Richard Strauss composed Ein Heldenleben (A Hero’s Life) in 1898. Ein Heldenleben is structured in six continuous sections. Here's a concise guide to each section: The Hero – a man full of swagger, bravado and self-confidence. Here enters the main theme and the earth-shattering fortissimo chord. The Hero’s Works of Peace - the hero reflects upon his achievement as excerpts from Strauss’s past triumphs – Don Juan, Tod und Verklärung, Don Quixote, Till Eulenspiegel, Also Sprach Zarathustra, et al – float in and out of the textures. The Hero’s Retreat from the World and Fulfilment - in which the dying strains of the enemies’ baying deep down the tubas are soothed by the magical strains of the solo violin, leading to a valedictory ending! Join us for An Heroic Journey on 11 June at the Southbank Centre.

Richard Strauss wrote Also" in 1899 and Ein Heldenleben in 1903 and was, as we know, interested in this new philosophies for Neitche and Schopenhauer and the idea of the Ubermensch" the superman of humanism, 20th century style. Known for the very famous "Sunrise' fortissimo opening, Also Sprach Zarathustra is a gorgeous symphonic poem running here with Dr. Reiner and his great chicago Symphony 31:53. Heldenleben" is longer, at 43:39. Recorded two days apart in May of 1954. The Previn/Vienna reading has a much better pipe organ, but the balance of Reiner is as good as the rest of the Telarc product.

Also sprach Zarathustra prepares to take its leave and the orchestra ascends towards the outer reaches of the cosmos. Strauss plotted the compositional flight paths of his earlier tone-poems – Don Juan, Till Eulenspiegel, Tod und Verklärung – around explicit narrative markers but in Zarathustra the challenge was to transmute Nietzsche’s abstract, high-minded philosophy into musical specifics: enveloping tonal relationships, notes to be written on the stave. In 1935 Serge Koussevitzky and the Boston Symphony Orchestra cut the first recording of Also sprach Zarathustra, and it still stands up to scrutiny remarkably well. The BPO attack with a rougher grain than the VPO but Koussevitzky finds a greater emotional range than Strauss can muster.

Album · 1999 · 11 Songs. Ein Heldenleben, Op. 40: I. Der Held. Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra & Willem Mengelberg. 40: II. Des Helden Widersacher.
