Nirvana BBC Sessions. Although we lived in Seattle from 1992 to 1999, I have to admit I came to appreciate Nirvana late. I had no real sense of the grunge scene or the importance of SubPop other than what you might get from a careful watching of Singles. Since then, though, I’ve really come to appreciate Nirvana and the impact they’ve had (and continue to have!) on many streams of modern rock. Another album also spoke of these same themes, the band was called Broadcast and their debut album was titled ‘The Noise Made By People’. Unlike Radiohead, Broadcast were subtler, more rhythmic, and worked in a less obscure medium. Coming some four years after the group's initial single release, the debut has attained a striking classical timelessness. These three BBC Radio One sessions were culled from broadcasts between 1996 and 2000. The bonus tracks were taken from a live appearance for the John Peel curated Meltdown Festival at the Queen Elizabeth Hall in London 1998. Four of the eight tracks performed live are included here.

Nirvana's last album pointed the way forward. But their MTV Unplugged concert - released as an album after Kurt's death - showed how the band could have survived in the longer term
Hearing these songs (as well as "The State I Am In," from Tigermilk) in such a raw and unadorned state (complete with vocal wavers and assorted bum notes) isn't a revelation now, though one can imagine people tuned in to their radios that night were thrown for a loop, but it is pretty great.
