Red Patent Leather is a 1984 live album by the earlier disbanded New York Dolls. It was recorded in New York a decade earlier, in March 1975, just a month before the group broke up while on tour in Florida. The New York performance was recorded at the "Little Hippodrome" club. The shows were the last performed by the group in New York, and as such, they made the small, unusual venue famous. The venue itself closed later that same year
Red Patent Leather was recorded during the band's final. phase of their short careers. The songs the band performs were supposed to be on their third album (before drugs and malaise forced Mercury to dump the band). Malcolm McLaren tried to relaunch the band by giving them a new look and attittude. They would come out on stage in red vinyl with a red hammer and sickle flag in the background. This backfired due to Americans not getting a joke and it horrified many of their old fans. The music on the disc is great. Too bad they would never record the music in the studio

The opening "Red Patent Leather" and "On Fire" never made it onto a Dolls studio platter, yet the combo charges through them with a notable swagger of familiarity. The lengthy list of cover material ranges from Eddie Cochran's angst and hormone-driven anthem "Something Else" - which is given a nonconformist assault similar to that delivered by the Sex Pistols on their Great Rock & Roll Swindle reading from 1976. Also included are Bo Diddley's "Pills" - which is one of the few tracks taken from a Dolls album - as well as Thunders' "Pirate Love," Sylvain Sylvain's (guitar) "Teenage News," and the compulsory medley of "Personality Crisis" and "Looking for a Kiss.
The New York Dolls is an American rock band, formed in New York in 1971. The band's protopunk sound prefigured much of what was to come in the punk rock era; their visual style influenced the look of many new wave and 1980s-era glam metal groups, and they began the local New York scene that later . ore .
