Magnifique is the fifth studio album by Ratatat, released on July 17, 2015. Ratatat began touring in early 2015 with limited stops in the midwestern US and the Coachella music festival where new songs were debuted. On April 12, 2015, the band released "Cream on Chrome", the first single from the album. On June 16, 2015, "Abrasive" was released as the second single. The album features a cover of the 1971 Springwater single "I Will Return" and cover artwork collage sketches by Evan Mast and Mike Stroud.
When Ratatat were at their peak (for my money, 2006’s Classics), the duo crystallized an aesthetic that was similar to chillwave before chillwave existed: a rudimentary, simplistic dissection, then careful re-assembly of, modern music’s most elemental pieces (keyboards, guitars, beats) that amplified the simple beauty of the bare necessities and evoked layered feelings of nostalgia. This is Magnifique's real issue: It’s not that the album is bland, it’s that it doesn’t really do anything or go anywhere.

After five years, Ratatat is finally back with a new album. Titled Magnifique, the band created the LP over the course of several years and in different locations, recording leisurely for a few months here and there. Splitting time between Brooklyn, upstate New York, and the island of Jamaica, the duo was in no hurry to bust out another album, especially after having recorded and toured endlessly for years prior. Magnifique is the result of a band coming out of a well deserved break, and their rejuvenation is apparent; Ratatat has made an album that flows from beginning to end.
Stripping away much of the excess instrumentation and frills that adorned the previous two albums, Magnifique mostly sticks to the basics on the way to becoming the duo's most brightly immediate record yet, bouncing between sunny, hook-heavy uptempo tracks that have the kind of manic energy that could lead people to tear off their shirts and seriously lose it on the. dancefloor and relaxed, soft rock-inspired songs that serve as a nice soundtrack when one is coming down from those kinds of highs.
REPORTED BY: Carolina Leal. Duo Mike Stroud and Evan Mast are releasing their fifth album, "Magnifique", out in July 17th, through XL Recordins, and was recorded through the past four years in Jamaica, upstate New York, Long Island, and Brooklyn. The first single is called "Cream on Chrome". Submitted By carolina.
Magnifique, the fifth album from Brooklyn-based duo Ratatat, discontinues the naming convention set up with LP3 and LP4. But it could comfortably be called LP5, such is the rigidity of an established formula: old-school prog-guitar wolf in electro-funk's clothing. Magnifique drags a bit, as can often be the case with instrumental tracks centred on repetitive patterns, but it demonstrates the band’s commitment to their oddball signature style.
