This Was is the debut studio album by the British progressive rock band Jethro Tull, released in 1968. Recorded at a cost of £1200, it is the only Jethro Tull album with guitarist Mick Abrahams, who was a major influence for the sound and music style of the band's first songs. When the album was released the band was already performing at the Marquee Club in London, where other successful British groups, such as the Rolling Stones and The Who, had started their careers.

Jethro Tull was initially a strange kind of blues band. Their first line-up included Mick Abrahams, Glenn Cornick, Clive Bunker, and Ian Anderson. Shop this was on burning shed. In June 1968, just before this album was recorded, Jethro Tull began a residency at London’s famed Marquee Club (where the ‘Stones and The Who also launched their careers). Band advisers failed to get Ian to give up the flute and let Mick do all the singing. The album was recorded without any record company contract presuming, correctly, that a deal could be made afterwards. Tull began their first US tour in January 1969, immediately after securing the services of guitarist Martin Barre. The album had little commercial impact in the US charts ( but the . tour did earn the band a strong.

Original album and bonus tracks remixed by Steven Wilson in . DTS and AC3. – Dolby Digital surround and 96/24 LPCM stereo. Flat transfer of the 1968 stereo remix. Presented in a case-bound DVD book filled with an extensive history of the album, track-by-track annotations by Ian Anderson, plus rare and unseen photographs.

Jethro Tull was very much a blues band on their debut album, vaguely reminiscent of the Graham Bond Organization only more cohesive, and with greater commercial sense. The revelations about the group's roots on This Was - which was recorded during the summer of 1968 - can be astonishing, even 30 years after the fact

After several name changes, Jethro Tull played its first show as Jethro Tull in February 1968. Months later, Ian Anderson, Mick Abrahams, Glenn Cornick and Clive Bunker released the band’s debut – This Was. The album debuted at on the . album chart, but more important, it was the first step in a 50-year (and counting) journey that made Jethro Tull one of the world’s most successful progressive rock bands. The title of the album refers to the band moving away from its early blues-based sound, which was referenced in the original liner notes: This was how we were playing then – but things change – don’t they? The album includes songs that have been in and out of Jethro Tull’s live show for 50 years, like My Sunday Feeling and Beggar’s Farm. Also featured are several bonus tracks: Love Story, A Christmas Song. Sunshine Day and Aeroplane.

This is the discography of the British progressive rock band Jethro Tull who formed in Luton, Bedfordshire, in December 1967. Initially playing blues rock, the band's sound soon incorporated elements of British folk music and hard rock to forge a progressive rock signature. The band were led by itarist Ian Anderson, and have included other significant members such as guitarist Martin Barre, drummer Doane Perry, and bassist Dave Pegg.

After several name changes, Jethro Tull played their first show under that name in February 1968. Months later, Ian Anderson, Mick Abrahams, Glenn Cornick and Clive Bunker released the band’s debut. albums chart, and rose to in the . Listen to Dharma for One from the original album. Recorded during the summer of 1968, This Was is the only Jethro Tull album to feature guitarist Mick Abrahams, who left the group shortly after the album came out to form Blodwyn Pig. The title of the album refers to the band moving away from its early blues-based sound, which was referenced in the original liner notes: This was how we were playing then-but things change-don’t they? Notes

UK pink Island 3rd label design, MONO pressing, with small white i label. Rough textured labels.
Laminated gatefold mono cover.
Inside gatefold has two un-flapped white borders.
Back cover: "Island Records Limited 155 - 157 Oxford Street London W1 England" in large lettering at the bottom. This has the wide white spine (8mm circa), with mono Category.

From book "FROG TO PROG: PINK LABEL LPS – Island Albums Part 1", by STUART PENNEY and CHRIS SAVAGE:
"The discovery of a 3rd design pink mono "This Was" gives the lie to the oft-quoted claim that this mix of Tull's debut was withdrawn immediately after release.
The 3rd pink label did not come into service for LPs until October 1969, almost a year after the mono "This Was" is generally thought to have been deleted!
Can the explanation lie in the murky and still unexplored waters of the great British export pressing? While the newly-unearthed white 'i' copy of "This Was" is certainly a U.K. pressing, the BIEM publishing legend on the label used to be seen more often on records originating in, or destined for, mainland Europe.
Whatever, Island definitely pressed up a second batch of mono Tull LPs in late 1969 or 1970, baffling researchers, discographers and others who care about such things.
The sleeve of this particular oddity is also unusual in that, though it has a similar design to those found housing 2nd and 3rd pink label pressings (as well as palm tree and early Chrysalis reissues), it features un-flapped white borders on the inside gatefold rather than the black borders found on all of those later pressings. Moreover, by the time the 3rd pink label carne into use, Island was firmly established at Basing Street, yet the laminated sleeve of this anachronistic mono pink still carries the label's earlier Oxford Street address in large lettering across the back".
