The Tradition of Mistletoe at Christmas. Mistletoe is a plant that grows on range of trees including willow, apple and oak trees. The tradition of hanging it in the house goes back to the times of the ancient Druids. It is supposed to possess mystical powers which bring good luck to the household and wards off evil spirits. It was also used as a sign of love and friendship in Norse mythology and that's where the custom of kissing under Mistletoe comes from. The name mistletoe comes from two Anglo Saxon words 'Mistel' (which means dung) and 'tan' (which means) twig or stick! So you could translate Mistletoe as 'poo on a stick'!!! Not exactly romantic is it! Mistletoe was also hung on the old English decoration the Kissing Bough.
They are attached to their host tree or shrub by a structure called the haustorium, through which they extract water and nutrients from the host plant. Their parasitic lifestyle have led to some dramatic changes in their metabolism
Stories, Legends and Tales of Christmas are quite interesting and have hidden morals to learn from. Most of these stories tell us to love all living things and show kindness to them. Christmas : Christmas Stories. Here is a collection of stories about the birth of Jesus Christ, the Three Wise men and Santa Claus. Legend of Mistletoe Mystical power of mistletoe and the tradition of kissing under the mistletoe owe itself to the legend of Goddess Frigga and her son Balder. Frigga was the Goddess of Love and her son, Balder, was the God of the Summer Sun. Legend of the Nativity The story of Nativity reiterates the birth of Jesus Christ that probably happened over two thousand years ago. In the town of Nazareth, there lived a pure young woman called Mary, who was engaged to a poor but good man called Joseph, who was a carpenter by profession.
In the UK, before Christmas Trees became popular and dating back to the middle ages, another popular form of Christmas/mid winter decoration was the Kissing Bough or Bunch. These were made of five wooden hoops that made the shape of a ball (four hoops vertical to form the ball and then the fifth horizontal to go around the middle). The hoops were covered with Holly, Ivy, Rosemary, Bay, Fir or other evergreen plants. Inside the hoops were hung red apples (often hung from red ribbons) and a candle was either put inside the ball at the bottom or round the horizontal hoop. For a simpler bough you could also just have a horizontal hoop decorated and hung with apples and the mistletoe. When should you take the greenery down? It is traditional to take down the decorations after Twelfth Night (5th January) on Epiphany (January 6th).
But at Christmas, it becomes a symbol of romance. So where did the tradition of kissing beneath the mistletoe come from? The plant’s association with romance dates back to ancient Norse mythology. By the 18th century, stealing a kiss beneath the mistletoe became a common practice among British servants and the tradition spread from there. According to the tradition, it’s bad luck to refuse a kiss beneath the mistletoe. After the kiss, the couple is to pluck one of the berries from the plant. But when did this potent mix of spices take on its Christmas connection? Ginger isn’t native to Europe, and it wasn’t until the era of the Crusades that traders began to bring the spice back from the Middle East.
Christmas time, mistletoe and wine Children singing Christian rhyme With logs on the fire and gifts on the tree A time for rejoicing in all that we see. A time for giving, a time for getting, A time for forgiving and for forgetting. Christmas is love, Christmas is peace, A time for hating and fighting to cease. Golden Hour is Kacey’s third studio album, and continues to branch out her self-described style of cosmic country. Packed with love songs and dreamy instrumentals, the singer-songwriter bounces between acoustic melodies and trippy electronic effects. The LP features her previously released singles Space Cowboy and Butterflies. along with the upbeat disco single High Horse. Kacey revealed in a Billboard interview that she was stuck in an un-creative place for a while. Then in 2016, she met singer-songwriter Ruston Kelly–Kacey’s now husband and collaborator on Golden Hour
