It's all basically a lot of tosh. The best way to get into Vivaldi, if that is your desire, is to get a good recording of one of his works and try to really absorb what's happening in the performance. Joshua Bell's new recording of the vivid Four Seasons concertos for violin and orchestra should do just fine. In fact, compelling, up-to-the-moment playing.
Sony's "an hour with" series embodies a mishmash of marketing fads. It's all basically a lot of tosh. What you get here, however, is mostly reissued from an album called the Vivaldi Collection that was pretty outmoded even when it first came out in 1989. All this said, An Hour with Vivaldi is better than it has a right to be. The central attraction is the Four Seasons, performed by none other than the Philadelphia Orchestra under its venerable leader Eugene Ormandy, who passed on in 1985.
