Seymour Reads the Constitution! is an album by pianist Brad Mehldau. The trio recording, with Larry Grenadier on bass and Jeff Ballard on drums, was released by Nonesuch Records in 2018. The pianist reported that the melody and name of the title track came from a dream, during which actor Philip Seymour Hoffman read to him. The album received two Grammy nominations at the end of 2018.

Best Jazz Instrumental Album: Seymour Reads the Constitution. Jazzwise Names Seymour Reads the Constitution! as one of the Top 20 Jazz Albums of 2018: Brad Mehldau’s teasing talent for setting a mood of fascinating expectation and then unhurriedly revealing its multiple implications has been a marvel of contemporary jazz since the 1990s, and rarely more so than on this riveting seventh album featuring his longterm trio with bassist Larry Grenadier and drummer Jeff Ballard.

Pianist Brad Mehldau has an adventurous and innovative side, one that he displays on Largo (Warner Brothers, 2002) and Highway Rider (Nonesuch, 2010), albums that feature expansive and-with Largo-electronic inputs. But he always returns to the acoustic trio format that brought him to prominence. With Mehldau-as it has been with the trio work of Bill Evans and Keith Jarrett-everything he does in the format has to be judged by comparison with his own oeuvre, a body of work that stands, consistently, above (with some exceptions; Evans and Jarrett, Marc Copland and Fred Hersch come to mind) the most skilled and inspired competition. Seymour Reads The Constitution! by Dan McClenaghan. Seymour Reads The Constitution! by Doug Collette. After Bach by Doug Collette.

A straightforward acoustic jazz trio album, 2018's Seymour Reads the Constitution! nonetheless holds surprises for longtime Brad Mehldau fans. Moving away from his genre-bending collaboration with Chris Thile and his equally cross-pollinated exploration of . Bach's classical pieces, After Bach, Mehldau settles into this warmly rendered set of originals and covers that fits nicely into his overall discography. Joining the pianist are his longtime associates bassist Larry Grenadier and drummer Jeff Ballard. Together, they've recorded often since the early 2000s, with Grenadier.

Mehldau released the solo album After Bach earlier this year; the album, which debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard Jazz Album chart, comprises the pianist/composer's recordings of four preludes and one fugue from . Bach's Well-Tempered Clavier, each followed by an "After Bach" piece written by Mehldau and inspired by its WTC mate.

In a dream, pianist Brad Mehldau heard the late Philip Seymour Hoffman reading the Constitution while a melody played. That melody became the title track here, a loping slow waltz that captures Mehldau’s venerated trio in all its soulful subtlety and restraint. The standard Almost Like Being in Love, by contrast, recalls the unstoppable tempos of some of Mehldau’s earliest recordings
