If the Faint are still smirking on Egowerk, their first album in five years, then they’re doing a better job disguising it. They’ve focused their ire on a subject a good deal more topical and resonant: social media, specifically the ways online platforms play into society’s worst instincts and exacerbate cultural divides.
While occasionally Egowork is the most genuine fun I’ve had with The Faint since the early 2000’s, The Faint end up dropping the ball with some of their cheesiest lyrics and performances to date. Give A Listen To: Child Asleep, Life’s a Joke, ‘Alien Angel, Own My Eyes, Young & Realistic. Genre: Electronic Rock, New Wave, Dance Punk. Or consider a donation? Track List.
The Faint returned in October with their first song in two years, Chameleon Nights. Now, the Omaha outfit has announced a new album on which that chaotic tune is set to appear. Titled Egowerk, it’s due out March 15th through Saddle Creek. The 11-track effort was entirely self-produced by the band and serves as the follow-up to 2014’s Doomed Abuse. Specifically, they focus on social media and the Internet as a whole, described by the band’s own Todd Fink as an amazing world of free knowledge, communication,.
Egowerk marks the Faint's return to the influential label, and while the group's signature blend of nihilist post-punk and twitchy electro-dance-rock remains at the fore, this time around the emphasis is decidedly on the latter persuasion. After Doom Abuse, drummer and chief programmer Clark Baechle relocated to Philadelphia, leaving the rest of the band in the heartland.
