Back in 2011, Ace Records released Take Me to the River: A Southern Soul Story, a triple-disc anthology capturing the deepest tributaries of Southern Soul. Take Me to the River concentrated on music recorded in the deep south, so the 2015 sequel, Back to the River: More Southern Soul Stories 1961-1978, functions as an answer of sorts, presenting three distinct tributaries flowing from the river of soul through the deep south.

75 Southern soul masterpieces, told from three different perspectives. When, nearly a decade ago, Tony Rounce and I began putting together a box set looking at the world of southern soul, it was done out of a deep abiding love of the music. We thought it would be an easy project that would sell a few thousand copies. Instead it was a mammoth operation that took three years to complete and when finished helped define the music we love for a mainstream audience. We followed up – in a way – in 2011 with The Fame Studios Story, but it is only now that we bring you a fully fledged sequel. Back To The River takes its cue from something Tony said back then: Take Me To The River was only ever A southern soul story, and that many others could be told from a variety of perspectives. Here we tell three of them. Disc One brings another view on the recordings of Muscle Shoals and Memphis.

The term Southern Soul usually evokes images of either some small studio in the Southern US states in the mid-60s to mid-70s, where the musicians are working at getting a suitable groove for a singer to pour heart and soul into some true-to-life lyrics, or a hot, sweaty chitlin’ circuit club, where the crowd is urging acts. on to ever greater heights of emotion over the relentless groove of the house band  . Southern Soul has so many stories to tell that a second collection was always inevitable. Back To The River has taken the premise of its predecessor and expanded its brief to bring you Southern soul not only from the south, but also southern-styled music from the north, east and west of the United States. As before, the 75 tracks run the gamut from well-known classics to little-known and highly valuable obscurities, topped off with a generous helping of previously unissued titles by familiar names

The following grading conditions apply to the vinyl component of an album or single: Sealed. This is what it says, that the record is still held fast in shrink-wrap. We tend to be pretty suspicious about these things, so if the shrink-wrap doesn't look original, or if the record seems to have undergone some damage over time, we'll probably take it out of the wrapper to ensure that it's in good shape - which is why we don't have more of these. A pair of late Motown albums from Undisputed Truth – both issued here back to back, as they originally appeared for the label! First up is Cosmic Truth – a fantastic 70s album from Undisputed Truth – and the first to fully feature the new version of the lineup, after the. Where The Girls Are Volume 10.

Southern soul offered a richly grounded production enhanced by gospel tinged organ and piano, small hours guitar and delicious horns – all of which served the vocal performance rather than swamping it. In this regard, it’s impossible not to mention the musical force behind, or spiritual influence over many of these recordings.
