Moving Pictures is the eighth studio album by Canadian rock band Rush, released on February 12, 1981 by Mercury Records in the United States. Its total length is 40:03. The band's lineup included vocalist, bassist, and keyboards player Geddy Lee, guitarist Alex Lifeson, and drummer Neil Peart. Moving Pictures is another perfectly balanced album with radio friendly rock and progressive rock. Moving Pictures was the band's most popular release yet as it reached on the Billboard 200 chart and the UK albums chart, as well as on the Canadian Albums Chart. It has since gone 4x Platinum in the . and Canada, as well as Silver in the . The strengths of this album are the progressive, but radio friendly style, the great musicianship, the excellent lyrics and themes, and the abundance of terrific catchy Rush hits.
Genre: Progressive Rock. This is Rush at their most tight, their most creative, their most to the point, and, to some, their best. It's all the experimentation and off the wall prog moments of their more experimental records while still maintaining that sense of true grit rock and roll that started them off, with a more loving relationship with synths shown in the last album.
Not only is 1981's Moving Pictures Rush's best album, it is undeniably one of the greatest hard rock albums of all time. The new wave meets hard rock approach of Permanent Waves is honed to perfection - all seven of the tracks are classics (four are still featured regularly in concert and on classic rock radio). While other hard rock bands at the time experimented unsuccessfully with other musical styles, Rush were one of the few to successfully cross over.
