For the Masses is a 1998 tribute album to Depeche Mode, specifically the works of Martin Gore. The album charted in America and reached the Top 20 in Germany, making it the most successful Depeche Mode tribute album of all time. The album title is taken from Depeche Mode's 1987 album Music for the Masses. The album cover was photographed by Martyn Atkins who shot and designed early Depeche Mode artwork; the whole album artwork is consistent with the past Depeche Mode albums.

What makes this such a huge song – while simultaneously being the antithesis of stadium rock – is that it consists of five richly addictive elements. While hugely popular, Depeche Mode were seen by many kids of my age at the time – who were more interested in the earthy rock of U2, the art-house darkness of Simple Minds or the "proper" indie of the Smiths – as a bit of fluff. And male fans in particular were regarded, in my small town at least, as objects of ridicule. This song, The Meaning of Love, Just Can't Get Enough, Leave in Silence, and album tracks such as Boys Say Go! and What's Your Name all have a certain vocal air that on the surface appears too light of touch, too dreamy to be of any substance; but in fact the lyrics of See You are rock solid, rooted in a.

Depeche Mode turned it down and instead released "See You," which Martin Gore wrote when he was only 16. "Only You" ended up being a hit for Yazoo, but "See You" proved that Depeche Mode could have a go without Clarke. Recalling this pivotal time, Gore told Mojo, "We didn't panic, we just booked some studio time. Then 'See You,' which I wrote when I was 16, was the first song we recorded and it was a huge hit; we felt invincible.
